The 2026 Toyota RAV4 raises the bar for safety with the debut of Toyota Safety Sense™ 4.0 (TSS 4.0)—Toyota’s most advanced driver-assist and active safety suite to date. Designed to enhance driver awareness, improve detection in complex driving environments, and support safer decision-making, TSS 4.0 represents the next evolution of Toyota’s commitment to safety.

With upgraded hardware, expanded detection capabilities, and the introduction of new intelligent features, the 2026 RAV4 delivers added confidence whether you’re commuting in town, navigating busy intersections, or cruising on the highway.

 

What’s New with Toyota Safety Sense™ 4.0?

Debuting on the 2026 RAV4, Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 introduces enhanced sensing technology and new system logic that improves how the vehicle responds to real-world driving scenarios. Notable additions include:

  • New Emergency Driving Stop System (EDDS)

  • New Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)

  • Improved pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcycle detection

  • Expanded intersection and low-speed collision support

  • Driver monitor system integration on select features

These upgrades allow the 2026 RAV4 to better anticipate potential hazards and assist drivers in avoiding or mitigating collisions under certain conditions.

Pre-Collision System with Expanded Intersection Support

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) in TSS 4.0 offers significant enhancements over previous versions.

Key Capabilities:

  • Pedestrian detection (daytime & low-light)

  • Daytime bicycle detection

  • Motorcycle detection in certain conditions

  • Intersection collision avoidance for crossing vehicles

  • Enhanced left- and right-turn support

  • Low-speed collision avoidance

  • Acceleration Suppression at Low Speed

PCS can warn drivers of oncoming pedestrians or vehicles when making turns at intersections and may apply emergency braking in certain scenarios. The system also includes Emergency Steering Assist with Active Support, designed to help stabilize emergency steering maneuvers and assist the vehicle in staying within its lane when avoiding pedestrians, cyclists, or other vehicles under specific conditions.

Lane Departure Alert with Guard Rail Detection

The 2026 RAV4’s TSS 4.0 suite includes an upgraded Lane Departure Alert (LDA) system with added intelligence and awareness.

Enhanced Features Include:

  • Steering Assist

  • Road Edge Detection

  • Motorcycle Detection

  • Guard Rail Detection

  • Obstacles Anticipation Assist

  • Driver monitor linking

This system can alert the driver if the vehicle begins to drift too close to lane markings, road edges, or guardrails—helping reduce unintended lane departures.

Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) in Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 builds on the smooth adaptive cruise functionality drivers expect, now with added refinements.

New Enhancements:

  • Full-speed operation

  • Curve Speed Management

  • Radar Cruise Eco Run Mode

  • Map-connected Drive

  • Detection of two vehicles ahead

  • Driver monitor integration

These features work together to provide more natural speed adjustments and improved awareness during highway driving.

Lane Tracing Assist with Emergency Driving Stop System

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) on the 2026 RAV4 benefits from improved lane centering and additional safety logic.

Key Additions:

  • Enhanced lane centering

  • Offset Passing functionality

  • Emergency Driving Stop System (EDDS)

If the system detects that the driver is unresponsive to alerts under certain conditions, EDDS can bring the vehicle to a controlled stop—adding an extra layer of protection.

Road Sign Assist

TSS 4.0 also enhances Road Sign Assist (RSA), helping drivers stay informed of posted road signs.

RSA can detect and display:

  • Speed limit signs

  • Stop signs

  • Yield signs

  • Do Not Enter signs

  • Select warning signs

Detected signs are shown on the Multi-Information Display, supporting better situational awareness.

Automatic High Beam Comes Standard

As with all Toyota Safety Sense packages, Automatic High Beam (AHB) is standard on the 2026 RAV4.

The system automatically switches between high and low beams based on surrounding traffic, helping improve nighttime visibility without distracting other drivers.
